Throughout 2025, the Defence Force School of Signals (DFSS) has worked hard to support Australian Army Cadets (AAC) Victoria. Teams from DFSS have conducted activities and static displays to provide cadets exposure to the wide range of job roles and capabilities available within the Royal Australian Corps of Signals.
Previously this year, DFSS hosted a weekend event on Simpson Barracks. This event provided cadets an opportunity to experience Army Physical Training, climb a Rigging tower and learn about field voice communications.
EXERCISE EMU
EXERCISE EMU is the largest annual cadet exercise for Victorian based AAC units. Over the course of 14 days, over 2000 Cadets conduct activities to enhance their basic field craft, shooting and leadership skills within the Puckapunyal Military Area. This provides Victoria based Army units, particularly the Schools, an excellent opportunity to conduct community engagement.
DFSS at EXERCISE EMU
Over the periods 15-16 and 22-24 September 2025, DFSS attended the cadets range days, which saw the cadets gain exposure to the EF88 and F89. While not on the firing mound, cadets were given the opportunity to engage with displays from DFSS, the School of Artillery, the School of Armour and the School of Transport.
With representatives across the Information Systems Engineer, Communication Systems Operator, Telecommunication Network Engineer and Network Technician (Air Force) roles, cadets were able learn about the wide variety of trades and unique opportunities available within the Corps of Signals and broader Defence communicator job roles.
Cadets were provided the opportunity to get up close to a G-Wagon Command Post Module, a Deployable Data Centre, and a Medium Satellite Communications Dish. Also available was a blindfolded team activity, where cadets utilised Soldier Personal Radios to guide each other through a designated set of cones encouraging them to demonstrate their communications skills.
The DFSS team generated significant engagement, and further developed relationship with AAC units that attended events earlier in the year. DFSS intends to continue to develop this relationship with AAC in the coming years through continued support and innovation in what experiences are provided.
